A Clinical Study of Colon and Rectal Cancer

Abstract
This is a clinical study of 54 cases of colorectal cancer who were treated at the Department of Surgery, Woo Sok Hospital, Korea University during the past 5 years from January 1970 to December 1974.
The results were as follows:
1. Most of the tumors were located in the rectosigmoid area (63%).
2. The sex distribution was as follows; Male 28 and female 26. The age distribution showed high incidence in the 6th decade (35.2%).
3. Sixteen of 54 cases (29.6%) were admitted to the hospital within 2 months of their initial symptoms and 57.4% within 6 months.
4. Among 54 cases, 15 patients were treated previously under the diagnosis of hemorrhoids (8 cases), colitis (5 cases) and appendicitis (2 cases).
5. The diagnosis of rectal cancer was made by digital examination combined with sigmoi-doscopy in 100% and 94.4% of colon cancer by X-ray study.
6. Abdominal pain was the most common symptom in patients with lesions of the colon and rectal bleeding was most common in rectal cancer.
7. The operability was 98.1% and the resectability 71.7%.
8. The histopathological findings revealed adenocarcinoma (93.9%), epidermoid carcinoma
(3.0%) and leiomyosarcoma (3.0%).
9. As for the complications, intestinal obstruction and perforation were most common before surgery, and prolapse of colostomy site and. wound infection were most common after surgery.
